The Great Taste and Health Benefits of San Marzano Tomatoes
January 8, 2024
For our simple pasta recipe with a dried pasta and San Marzano tomatoes, onions, peppers, oregano, olive oil, and salt, in addition to tasting great, there are many health benefits of the San Marzano tomatoes.
Taste: San Marzano tomatoes taste great because they are sweet and less acidic compared to regular tomatoes. Why? Because these tomatoes are grown under strict Italian quality rules. They are grown in the Campania region of Italy due to the quality of the soil. They have approved irrigation methods, and limited use of fertilizers and pesticides. They are picked by hand and peeled and canned in a short period of time to preserve freshness. Their cans will also have DOP on their labels to confirm they are authentic.
Health: On their health benefits, they are high in vitamins C and K. Vitamin C is well known for its immune-boosting benefits, as well as collagen production which aides in skin and bone health. Vitamin K assists with bone health and blood clotting. They also contain potassium and folate where potassium aides in regulating blood pressure while folate (B9) supports the production of DNA and red blood cells while supporting brain health.
